What is the difference between the NYSE and Nasdaq?

How trades are matched, mostly. The New York Stock Exchange gives each listed stock a designated market maker, a firm obliged to keep trading orderly in it, and still runs a trading floor on Wall Street alongside its electronic system. Nasdaq has no floor and never did: several market makers compete to quote each stock on a network.

For someone buying a share through a broker the difference is invisible. Both are regulated by the SEC, both are open the same hours, and a broker routes the order either way.

Why does a company choose one over the other?

Fees, the listing standards each sets, and image. The NYSE has long been home to large, older companies, including many of the household consumer names. Nasdaq built its name on technology listings. Both now list every kind of company, and some have moved from one to the other.

Are Nasdaq Stockholm and Nasdaq the same?

Same owner, different exchange. Nasdaq, Inc. owns exchanges in the Nordic and Baltic countries, including Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki. A company listed in Stockholm is not listed in New York unless it has a separate line there.
