Stock social sentiment, read daily

StockTwits prints a sentiment score for every symbol: 0 is all bearish, 100 all bullish, 50 neutral. We read it for 1,000 US stocks and ETFs and put it beside how many Reddit posts name each one, so you can see which way a crowd leans and how big the crowd is.

How to read a sentiment score

The score covers the last 24 hours of posts on the symbol. A 70 on a ticker with 2 million watchers and a 70 on one with 3,000 are not the same reading: check the watchers and the message volume before the score. Message volume of 50 is the symbol's normal; far above it means people are posting more than usual.

Social sentiment for each stock and ETF

Most watched first. Sentiment and volume are StockTwits' scores, 0 to 100; Reddit is posts we found naming the ticker in 30 days; Hype is the Hype Score.

What social sentiment measures, and what it does not

It measures the mood of the people who post. StockTwits users skew toward active retail traders, and a score is only as wide as the crowd behind it. It does not measure the company: a bearish crowd on a growing business and a bullish crowd on a shrinking one are both common.

That is why Kovered's Hype Score leaves sentiment out. The score ranks how much attention a ticker gets; sentiment sits beside it so you can see which way that attention leans.

Reddit and StockTwits: two different crowds

StockTwits is built around symbols, so every post is tagged to a ticker and the platform scores the mood itself. Reddit is built around conversations: a post on r/wallstreetbets may name three tickers or none. So on Reddit we count the posts that name a ticker and leave the tone alone. The two together tell you more than either: a ticker loud on both is in the retail conversation; one loud on StockTwits alone may be a traders' story Reddit has not picked up. Our StockTwits vs Reddit explainer compares them.

Social sentiment vs news sentiment

News sentiment scores what journalists write; social sentiment scores what investors post. News moves on events and is written to be balanced; social posts move faster and are written to persuade. See social sentiment vs news sentiment.

Part of a bigger picture: alternative data

Social sentiment is one kind of alternative data for stocks, the kind anyone can read for free. The pillar page covers the rest, web traffic and card data included, and says which of them Kovered measures.

Stock social sentiment: questions

What is stock social sentiment?
A reading of which way people posting about a stock on social media lean, usually from bearish to bullish. On Kovered it is StockTwits' own sentiment score for each symbol, 0 to 100 with 50 neutral, read once a day.
Where does social media stock sentiment come from?
Mostly from StockTwits, Reddit and X. Kovered reads StockTwits' public symbol pages and counts the posts naming each ticker on r/wallstreetbets, r/stocks, r/investing, r/StockMarket, r/pennystocks, r/options. It does not read X.
Does Kovered score Reddit sentiment?
No. Reddit is counted, not scored: how many posts name a ticker. Whether those posts are bullish or bearish is not judged, because a model guessing the tone of a post would be an estimate. The sentiment column is StockTwits' score.
Is bullish social sentiment a buy signal?
No. It is a reading of a crowd, and crowds are often wrong. Kovered gives no buy, sell or hold signals and nothing on the site is investment advice.
How often is the sentiment updated?
The most followed tickers are read every day after the US close, the rest every three to fourteen days. Each ticker page shows the date of its last reading.

Not investment advice. Kovered publishes StockTwits watcher, sentiment and message volume readings and counts of public Reddit posts that name a stock or ETF, plus, for listed consumer companies, readings of the brands they own. It does not publish share prices, forecasts, ratings or recommendations to buy, sell or hold anything. Do your own research. Read the full notice.
