What the Hype Score measures

Attention, and only attention. A score in the 90s says more people are watching, posting about and newly following that ticker than almost any other we read today. It does not say whether those people are right, whether they are bullish, or what the stock will do.

How the Hype Score is calculated

Four readings, each ranked as a percentile against every other scored ticker, then weighted and added up. A ticker needs 2 StockTwits readings, the latest within 21 days, to get a score; below that it gets a dash.

Hype Score components and weights
ComponentWeightWhat it is
StockTwits message volume35%StockTwits' own score for how much a symbol is being posted about against its normal, 50 being normal.
Watcher growth per week25%The change in StockTwits watchers between two of our readings at least five days apart, as a rate per week.
Reddit posts, 30 days20%Posts naming the ticker on the six stock subreddits we read, over 30 days. ETFs and stocks with no consumer brands have been counted since 8 November 2026, so their first month is partial.
Watchers20%How many people follow the symbol on StockTwits at the latest reading.

Growth is a rate per week, so a ticker we read daily and one we read every fourteen days compare fairly. If a reading is missing, its weight is shared across the others rather than filled in with a guess.

Why sentiment is left out

An attention index that rose with bullish posts would be a rating in disguise. So the score ignores which way a crowd leans, and every ticker page shows StockTwits' sentiment beside it. On the stats page the two are plotted against each other, and the relation is printed with its strength.

A relative score, recomputed every day

The Hype Score is a rank, not a count. When every ticker gets louder at once, scores stay put; when one gets louder than the rest, its score rises. That makes it good for comparing tickers on the same day and for seeing a ticker's rank change week to week, and useless as a measure of how busy the whole market is. For raw numbers, see StockTwits watchers and Reddit post counts.

Using the Hype Score in your research

Treat a high score as a question, not an answer: why is everyone looking at this today? The ticker's page shows which reading is driving it, and the filings and news say what happened. The score is one piece of alternative data, alongside social sentiment.

Stock Hype Score: questions

What is a stock Hype Score?
On Kovered, a number from 0 to 100 for how much attention a stock or ETF is getting right now on StockTwits and Reddit, ranked against every other ticker we read. 100 is the most attention in the pool, 0 the least.
How is the Hype Score calculated?
From four readings, each turned into a percentile against the other tickers: StockTwits message volume (35%), watcher growth per week (25%), Reddit posts in 30 days (20%) and watchers (20%). A missing reading drops out and the rest are rescaled; nothing is filled in.
Does a high Hype Score mean a stock will go up?
No. It means a lot of people are watching and posting about it. Attention comes with good news and bad news alike, and the score says nothing about the price. It is not a rating and not investment advice.
Why is sentiment not in the Hype Score?
Because a score that rose with bullish posts would read as a rating, and Kovered gives none. StockTwits' sentiment is shown beside the score on every ticker page instead.
Which stock has the highest Hype Score today?
AMD (Advanced Micro Devices), at 81 of 100, on 7 Nov 2026.
How is this different from AltIndex's AI score?
AltIndex describes its score as an AI rating of each holding built from several kinds of data. Kovered's Hype Score is a plain percentile of four public attention readings, with the weights printed on this page, and it rates nothing.

Not investment advice. Kovered publishes StockTwits watcher, sentiment and message volume readings and counts of public Reddit posts that name a stock or ETF, plus, for listed consumer companies, readings of the brands they own. It does not publish share prices, forecasts, ratings or recommendations to buy, sell or hold anything. Do your own research. Read the full notice.
