Methodology
How the ticker numbers are built
Every ticker gets two kinds of reading: what StockTwits shows for it, and how often stock subreddits name it. Listed consumer companies also carry readings of the brands they own. Anything we have not measured is a dash.
How StockTwits is read
We read the public StockTwits page of every US stock and ETF on this site after the US close, and keep the watcher count, StockTwits' own sentiment and message volume scores (0 to 100) and the US trending list the page carries. Numbers only: no message, username or post is stored or shown.
- Daily: the 14 ETFs and 48 market stocks (semiconductors, AI, big tech, energy, retail favourites, small caps), 20 consumer stocks, and the 10 tickers Reddit discussed most that week.
- Every 3 days, weekly or every 14 days for the rest, by how much attention they get: of the 839 stocks and ETFs added from the S&P 500, the Nasdaq-100 and the most-held ETFs, 93 weekly and the rest every 14 days. A day we did not read is a gap in the chart, never a zero.
How Reddit mentions are counted
Reddit numbers count the ticker itself. Every four hours we read the new posts on r/wallstreetbets, r/stocks, r/investing, r/StockMarket, r/pennystocks, r/options, back to where the last read stopped. A post counts once for each ticker on our list it names, by a $CASHTAG or by a US symbol written in capitals. Symbols that are also everyday words or Reddit shorthand (COST, GAP, GOLF, YOLO, DD and others) count only as cashtags, and symbols of one or two letters ($F, $KO) only as cashtags. For the stocks and ETFs with no consumer brands, counted since 8 November 2026, a symbol of three letters or fewer counts only as a cashtag ($ALL, $NOW, $CAT) unless it means nothing else on a stock subreddit (AMD, IBM, XOM). Comments are not read, and a ticker outside our list is not counted. A change needs the whole earlier period to have been read. Who posted is never stored. See WallStreetBets and Reddit stocks.
Consumer companies: readings of the brands they own
A listed consumer company's page also adds up what we measure for its brands on Monitor Mentions. If none of its brands has a reading, the number is a dash.
Which brands count toward which ticker
Each of the 295 brands on a ticker page was matched to its parent by hand, against the company's own brand list or investor relations pages, a deal announcement, or a public record. Every company row keeps the source it was checked against and the date, last checked 22 Oct 2026. The source is linked at the bottom of each ticker page.
- Only brands a company owns a majority of. A 50% joint venture or a minority stake is left out.
- Only closed deals. A brand with a signed sale that has not completed stays off every ticker page until it does.
- A listed subsidiary keeps its own ticker. Minimalist counts toward Hindustan Unilever, not Unilever; Porsche toward Porsche AG, not Volkswagen.
- Brands owned by private companies, private equity or cooperatives have no ticker page.
How each number is added up
- Instagram followers is the sum of each brand's latest follower reading. Brands without a reading add nothing and the page says how many were counted.
- Follower change compares two readings we took at least 5 days apart within 30 days, summed over the brands that have both. The leaderboard needs a combined base of 10,000 followers.
- Posts are public Instagram posts by other accounts that name a brand, over the last 7 and 30 days. A brand's own posts never count. A zero is shown only when we searched in that window and found nothing.
- Social momentum is this week's posts against the 7 days before, over brands searched in both weeks. A percentage needs at least 5 posts last week; below that the counts are shown alone.
- Tone and subjects come from posts labelled one at a time as positive, neutral or critical and by what they are about. Tone needs 15 labelled posts. Every figure is a count of labelled posts.
- AI recommendations are ChatGPT and Gemini answers to three fixed shopper questions per category, asked monthly. The share is answers that name one of the company's brands, out of answers in the categories its brands sell in, shown from 6 answers.
- News and launches are publishers' headlines naming a brand, linked to the publisher. A launch is a press release or a headline with launch wording; we do not pull product names out of it.
- Partners and associations are reviewed rows from trade coverage. People are not shown on this site.
The Hype Score
A number from 0 to 100 for how much attention a ticker is getting right now, ranked against every other ticker we read on StockTwits. It is built from four readings, each turned into a percentile: StockTwits' message volume score (35%), the change in watchers per week between two of our readings (25%), posts naming the ticker on the six subreddits in 30 days (20%) and the number of watchers (20%). A ticker needs two readings, the latest within three weeks, to get one.
The score never uses sentiment, so it says nothing about which way a crowd leans, and nothing about the stock. Growth is a rate per week, so a ticker we read daily and one we read every 14 days compare fairly, and the same subreddits are read for every ticker. Every scored ticker is on the stats page.
Not investment advice
This site publishes community readings about stocks and ETFs and counts and readings about consumer brands. It does not publish share prices, price targets, forecasts or ratings, and nothing on it is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold a security. The Hype Score ranks attention on StockTwits and Reddit; it is not a score of the stock. How many people watch a ticker or post about it says nothing certain about its price, and a brand's Instagram attention is one small input to a company's results, and for a company with many businesses we do not track, a very small one. The numbers can be incomplete or late. Do your own research and speak to a licensed adviser before investing.
